The Estate originally consisted of 16,000 acres and the Hall would have been self-supporting with its own bake-house, brewery, buttery, dairy, ice-house and chapel. The family were renowned for their racehorses and had a three and a half mile race course in the grounds.
Other Estate buildings include the impressive gatehouses, an unusual dovecote with 850 nesting boxes and a large stable and courtyard.
To the rear of the Hall the service quarters, grouped around an open courtyard, now serve as an outdoor refreshment area in summer. The old kitchen has been transformed into a charming tea-room and the West Wing a centre for conferences and events.
Lytham is well worth exploring with its attractive tree-lined streets, specialist shops, historic windmill, Heritage Centre and
Lifeboat Museum on the green overlooking
the Ribble Estuary. |
