Lytham Hall, a fine grade I listed 18th century manor house on
the Lancashire Fylde Coast |
The Hall is situated in 80 acres of mature parkland, and was built for Thomas Clifton by John Carr of York between 1752-1764 on the site of an earlier manor house and Priory settled by Benedictine monks from Durham. The Clifton family had been in the area since the 12th century and purchased the Manor of Lytham in 1606. They were a colourful family and lived in considerable style. Strong Catholics, they were accused of conspiracy during the Lancashire plot to restore James II but were later acquitted. The many fine family portraits, furniture and original fittings still convey the feeling of a private residence. |
